ACC offers
FAFSA assistance for all college-bound students

Students at ACC studying
Arapahoe Community College is proud to announce that it will host FAFSA Labs (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every Monday from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. throughout the fall semester.

ACC is making its FAFSA Labs available to all college-bound students, not just those who plan to attend ACC. The FAFSA process has recently changed, and students seeking to secure financial aid for the 2017-18 academic year may now submit their FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016. This streamlined process will allow students and their families to report income and tax information from the 2015 tax year.

“Students can now begin the process earlier, which is advantageous for first-come, first-served financial aid deadlines,” said Heidi Markey, Director of Financial Aid at ACC. “In the past, students were not able to complete the FAFSA until Jan. 1, which meant that most financial aid awards were based on estimated income information. Using income information from the previous tax year will help our office deliver more accurate and timely financial aid awards.”

Schedule a FAFSA Lab appointment online, or drop by the Littleton Campus on a Monday afternoon that fits your schedule.

The ACC Littleton Campus will also host College Goal Sunday on Nov. 13. We’ll have staff on hand from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. who can assist you with completing the FAFSA or answer any questions you may have about financial aid and paying for college.

“Because the FAFSA is now available earlier, students should feel less pressure because they will have additional time to explore – and apply for – financial aid,” explained Markey. “We encourage all college-bound students to take advantage of ACC’s FAFSA Labs, or visit us at the Littleton Campus on College Goal Sunday. We will be happy to guide you through the process.”

At ACC, we offer both quality and value.  ACC has more than 100 associate degree and certificate programs, as well as guaranteed transfer programs into many of Colorado’s four-year public institutions. Our instructors are experts in their field, and classes are available both online and at our campuses in Littleton, Parker and Castle Rock. You can achieve your academic and career goals, and ACC can help you every step of the way.

Contact the ACC Financial Aid Office at 303.797.5661 or finaid@arapahoe.edu for any questions you may have about the FAFSA.  Together…we can Move Mountains in helping students and their families apply for financial aid.

Western Welcome Week 2016

Western Welcome Week Volunteers 2015

Western Welcome Week Volunteers 2015

We are just a couple of weeks away from Western Welcome Week! Arapahoe Community College (ACC) has a special place for the event that the City of Littleton puts on. We are sponsors, breakfast hosts, parking lot quarters, parade-goers, and festival vendors – we even provide water for the horses!

The 2016 Western Welcome Week theme is “Salute to Educators”. Each year the Western Welcome Week committee selects an individual or individuals that exemplifies the theme, as the Grand Marshal. This year there is a trio of grand marshals that represent the past, present and future of the education profession. We are honored that an ACC graduate, Hannah Sturdivant, has been selected as one of three grand marshals, serving as the future grand marshal. Sturdivant earned her Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as her Early Childhood Director Certificate, at ACC. She is currently employed at Belle’s and Beau’s at the Farm in Aurora, and works with children of all ages. Hannah aspires to become a curriculum coordinator for various early childhood classrooms.

Western Welcome Week parade volunteers – 2015

We have several opportunities to volunteer. ACC will host the Family Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, August 14 from 7:30 am – 11:30 am. Come and dine on all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausages, and coffee, while catching-up with friends. The kids can play FREE “Games of Old” and round up for the “Bruce Wolf Stick Horse Stampede”. The cost is $5 per person and is hosted on the ACC Littleton campus. If you would like to help serve the community breakfast, contact Jeff Duggan 303.797.5709 jeff.duggan@arapahoe.edu.

If you can’t make it on the 14th, then consider volunteering on Saturday, August 20 at the Grand Parade. The parade runs from 10 am – noon though downtown Littleton. Join the ACC parade walkers as we represent the college and Salute to Educators. After the parade, you can visit the festival and all the great vendors from around the city. If you would like to walk the parade with the ACC team, contact Karen Browning 303.797.5736 karen.browning@arapahoe.edu.

The Western Welcome Week celebrations start Friday August 12th and go through Sunday August 21st. There are plenty of activities for you and the family. Or if you are just looking to attend the celebration, check out the list of events at westernwelcomeweek.org. We hope to see you there!

Start your child’s education off right at ACC’s newly remodeled Child Development Center

Classroom at ACC's Child Development Center

Teacher Ms. Helen sharing her pet duck, “Quackers,” with her Pre-K classroom.

The group of toddlers giggle in delight as the teacher reads the interactive book, “Press Here,” about a magical dot that multiplies, changes color, and expands. Each child has a colored dot sticker on their hand they press when prompted. The children are learning to follow directions, numbers, colors, and size, all in a fun, playful manner. On the playground, a group of three boys are working to build sand ramps with PVC pipes. When two boys begin arguing because they want the same piece, the teacher helps them problem solve a solution. They are learning engineering, verbal, social, and problem-solving skills.

The Child Development Center at Arapahoe Community College is child care that provides quality early learning experiences for young children of ACC students, faculty, staff, and families in the community. A NAEYC (National Association for the Education for Young Children) accredited center, the school provides care and learning Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm for children ages 18 months to Pre-Kindergarten and we are expanding!  As part of this expansion, we have undergone some exciting changes as the North Building has been renovated to incorporate improved services for children, families, staff, and students.

  • A safer, more secure center. There is now restricted access via the new entrance on the East side of the building. Only parents, staff, Early Childhood Education (ECE) faculty and students will be able to access the center. Child Care drop off parking spots are located in Lot B only for a quicker, safer entrance for small children. All ACC staff, faculty, and students in these programs have passed background checks. All other visitors will need to enter the East entrance, check into the office and show a picture id.
  • Observation rooms. Each classroom now has an area to observe the children and teachers. Both ECE students and parents will be able to view what is going on in the classrooms through the “one way” glass. Dimmers on the lights allow more or less visibility.
  • New classrooms as well as center layout. To expand access as well as improve services, we have done some rearranging of classrooms and offices. We will eventually have a total of 5 classrooms, an indoor gym/activity room, ECE faculty offices, and two adult ECE classrooms.

Along with our newly renovated facility, here are a couple of important facts about our services:

  • We offer 2, 3, or 5 full-day Schedules. Children need to arrive by 9:00am daily to start their day and enjoy breakfast with their friends. Children need routine and a consistent start time helps maximize learning opportunities.
  • We serve healthy, family-style breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack daily at no extra cost.
  • We offer Child Care Stipends for ACC students and alumni who are continuing to a 4-year, accredited institution. Stipends are competitive; applications are due in July and awarded for both Fall and Spring Semesters.
  • We accept a limited number of CCAP slots for currently enrolled ACC students.

If you are interested in learning more about our program and the services we offer or to schedule a tour, please give me a call at 303-797-5678 or visit the ACC Child Development Center web page.

Build Your Future – Transfer Tips and Resources

Have you considered where you will transfer?

It is never too early to start researching 4-year universities! Exploring your options earlier will help you make educated choices about your classes here at ACC. Take time to consider what you are looking for in a 4-year institution. Check out the list below to help determine what factors are important to you when it comes to picking the right university for you!

Examples of Factors to Consider When Researching Schools

  • Program of Study – Consider if the college offers programs that will help you achieve your career goals.
  • School Size – Would you prefer a large or small school?
  • Class Size – How large do you like your classes to be?
  • Support Programs – Does the college offer programs to help you stay in school?
  • Transfer of Credit – How will my community college credits transfer?
  • City and Neighborhood – Do you prefer a city or a small town?
  • Campus Culture – When visiting each college, get a feel for its personality?  Does it match yours?
  • Distance from Home – How close would you like to live to your family?
  • Extracurricular Activities – Do you have activities in your life that you can’t live without?
  • Religious Affiliation – Depending on your religious beliefs, you may be interested in looking at a college affiliated with your religious background.
  • Cost of Attendance (COA) – While a college may appear more expensive, what will the final cost be after receiving financial aid and scholarships?
  • Financial Aid Options – Does the college have special financial aid options to help you pay for college?  Payment plans? Guaranteed COA?
  • Outside Learning Opportunities – Does the college offer internships, externships, study abroad opportunities or service learning opportunities?

Things to Consider When Transferring to a 4 Year School

  • Understand all applicable dates and deadlines.
  • Transferring mid-year can result in less financial aid and fewer course choices.
  • Completing your associates degree has benefits:
  • ACC may have a guaranteed transfer degree or a transfer agreement in your area of study.
  • Less expensive in the long run to finish your associates degree before transferring.
  • Credits completed at an institution of higher education in the state of Colorado are good for 10 years.
  • Students must earn a ‘C’ or better for courses to be accepted for transfer.
